In Between evolved after Sarkissian first visited Armenia as an adult. Born and raised in Syria as the grandson of Armenian genocide refugees, his sense of the ‘homeland’ was mediated through the stories and legends most diaspora Armenians grow up with.
However, the reality of an impoverished Armenia struggling to survive and recovering from the remains of the Soviet system did not match this conjured image of a self-assured and proud ‘Mother Armenia’. The series show the country covered by snow, a white blanket that obstructs our vision and hides the harsh reality underneath it, allowing the diaspora to hold on to their perceptions.
